Natalia Haddad is back in Richmond, Virginia after retiring from the New York City Ballet. She is working at the Richmond Ballet studio as a choreographer for this year's production of The Nutcracker. Vivíana Serrano, an aspiring ballerina who grew up training at her parents' Latin Dance school, The Baila Studio, auditions for the coveted role of the Sugar Plum Fairy. While Natalia is moved by Viví's audition, Ms. Kat, the head of the studio, decides to cast someone else. Viví is crushed. Determined, Natalia seeks Viví out and offers to choreograph something for Viví's reel so she can start submitting to ballet companies. While hesitant at first, Viví agrees to work with Natalia. As they work together, with the help of the lighting designer Mateo and Viví's friend Justin, Natalia has the opportunity to spend time with Viví's big, loving Puerto Rican family. She encourages Viví to bring her Latin dance training to her ballet. Together, they create a surprise reprise of the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy . . . with a twist.
