Christmas is fast approaching and years of long workdays employed at New York's top corporate law firm are about to pay off now that Lucy Toomey will be made partner after the New Year. However, when her older sister with special needs, Alice, unexpectedly passes away, Lucy dreads returning back to Nilson's Bay, Wisconsin to handle her sister's estate. Upon returning, she meets Peter Swenson, her old high school sweetheart and Alice's former attorney, who informs Lucy of the terms of Alice's eccentric will. It states that if she wishes to inherit her family home she must take it easy and live there for a whole month during the holiday season. Lucy reluctantly agrees to stay and while organizing Alice's belongings, discovers a trunk filled with exquisite Christmas quilts made by her sister that are mysteriously inscribed "To Maeve", a name Alice never mentioned. Sparks fly when Peter stops by to invite Lucy to get a Christmas tree with him, but the reunion turns awkward when Lucy inquires about Maeve's identity. Peter claims to not know who Maeve is but guides Lucy to reach out to Alice's diverse group of friends in order to find out more about her sister. As the dayspass, Lucy begins to see the town, and Alice's life, with new eyes. Peter offers companionship while Lucy mourns her sister and he is determined to not let Lucy feel left out of the town's annual Christmas festivities. He invites her tohis mother's annual ugly Christmas sweater party, ice fishing, the community tree lighting, and the annual Taste of Christmas event. Lucy's feelings for Peter begin to rekindle, however she keeps him at a bay, unsure of falling in lovewhen she is about to embrace her new career. Things become further complicated, when Peter confesses to Lucy that all along he has known Maeve's true identity. Maeve is the child that Alice gave up for adoption many years ago before her accident and her niece has recently reached out and wishes to meet her. When Lucy reunites with Maeve, she begins to understand that her time in Nilson's Bay was Alice's enduring gift and decides to stay. -Embracing love, friends, anda family she never knew she had and the Christmas her sister always wanted her to celebrate.
